Stornoway

The Outer Hebrides

Derived from the Norse Stjórnavágr, meaning 'Steering Bay' Stornoway has been a long established port and township on the Isle of Lewis. The town grew rapidly during the late 1800's due to the growth in Herring export. As the Capital of the Outer Hebrides Stornoway offers many shops, restaurants and conveniences.

Please note that the Island keeps a traditional timetable meaning most places are closed on a Sunday. Some bars and restaurants are open.

The Outer Hebrides has something for everyone. For History visit Museum nan Eilean, Gearrannan Blackhouse Village or the Blackhouse Museum at Arnol. Explore the ancient at the Callanish Stones and Dun Carloway Broch. Wildlife can be seen on land and at sea. Take in the scenery on foot on one of the many coastal or hill walks. To relax stroll along one of the many white sand beaches of Lewis and Harris.
